My daughter was diagnosed with coeliac disease in 2017 and at the time was a horrible shock. How did I not know? I had been feeding my child gluten for 6 years.

My daughter is an asymptomatic coeliac which means shows no real signs or symptoms, like pain or abnormal bowel BUT  for her eating gluten has been destroying her small bowel (which can be repaired) which in turn stops nutrient absorption, mainly iron and was severely anaemic. It affected her moods, energy, ability to be a happy 6 year old. ⠀⠀ ⠀

Coeliac disease affects people of all ages, both male and female but any person affected would be born with a genetic predisposition.  In people with the disease the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and oats.  Do you know how many foods, drinks even lollies contain some form of gluten?  A LOT! ⠀⠀ ⠀

Upon diagnosis, I felt sick… all the parties she would go to and not be able to eat any of the food.  Limited choices to eat when we go out. I was lucky enough to have a couple of friends that had been through the same experience so helped me in the right direction. I will share some of the best places (in my opinion) here if you are living a gluten free life.  You might just prefer a gluten free life without being affected by coeliac disease or an intolerance.

Some tips to help you get started:

  • Search Coeliac Australia in the App Store and download their free app – they have an ingredient list which is a great go to if you are looking at products that are not labelled GF and you want to double check.
  • I found this great info through Coeliac Australia too – there are a couple of exceptions to the rules when looking at product by ingredient. Some ingredients are so highly processed that they are gluten free even though a  gluten source is identified – the 3 most common exceptions are: Glucose syrup (wheat), Caramel Colour (wheat) and Dextrose (Wheat).  These ingredients are ok with a gluten free diet – this will mean the world if you have a child wanting to eat certain lollies or sweets!
